Our championship was rescheduled from June to August 3rd & 4th at CC of Farmington and the format was changed to reduce the number of days required by eliminating the qualifying round - the 1st round matches were determined by players' handicap indices.

The 2020 Champion was Leslie Li (Tumble Brook CC) and the Runner Up was Priscilla Wargo (Heritage Village CC). The other two semi-finalists were Patti Cheyne (Hartford GC) and Mercedese Large (Wampanoag CC).

The Founders Cup Champion was Pam Burt (CC Farmington), victorious over Christine Sullivan (New Haven CC) in the final. Donna Harris (Farmington Woods GC) and Donna Forshaw (Redding CC) were semi-finalists.

We held our second virtual golf tournament on Tuesday June 23rd and Wednesday June 24th and it was a resounding success. The format was a Better-Ball Stableford to benefit our PME/CWGA Scholarship Fund. 111 members participated across 3 states and 34 golf courses! Results and pictures can be seen below.

Most importantly, with your generosity we have raised $1,845 from the entry fees and additional donations.

In 2020 the PME/CWGA Scholarship fund paid out almost $36 thousand to 17 young women scheduled to graduate between 2021 and 2024. The average scholarship is currently about $2,000 and these scholarships are renewable for up to four years of college expenses. The average GPA of our scholarship recipients was 3.6 and ranged from 3.2 to 4.0. If you'd like to learn more about the scholarship fund you can read about it on our website: https://cwga.org/Juniors

For those who played, thank you for your pictures, scorecards, use of Golf Genius to enter your scores, and enthusiastic response and support as we find ways to be together but separate! And don't forget to post your score!

For those of you who would were not able to play but made a contribution we are truly grateful.

Bruce wrote an article recently about the coronavirus impact on golf in CT. Toward the end of his article he commented on the CWGA and our use of Zoom for meetings and the virtual golf tournament he held recently. Click here to read the full article.

We find ourselves in a time of great challenge given the Covid-19 pandemic. We recently heard from our President, Sara Papa, that a prudent decision was made to cancel all CWGA events through June 30th. This includes the Club Reps event at Old Lyme CC scheduled on May 6.

We sincerely thank all our “allies" involved at Old Lyme CC for their support to include CWGA Rep Helene Nichols, Club Professional Rob Barbeau and the Banquet team. Additionally, we thank our guest speaker, Steve Basson of CSGA.

Definitely, a bright light in this storm is the cadre of Club Reps across the state who keep our association strong. Your commitment is greatly appreciated. During this “downtime” I encourage you to “safely” connect with the members of your club.

    Here are a few ideas:

    • Continue to strengthen our organization:
    • Reach out to those who have not yet renewed their membership
    • Post a note/email about the new index entry requirement (25)
    • Send our website to eligible or “nearly" eligible women to share who we are
    • Stimulate interest in the Fall Past Presidents Cup matches - always great team golf
    • Encourage members to register now for events starting in July

As the season progresses, the Board will stay in touch with our members. What is most important now is to take care of family and friends and help those we can through these demanding times.

We look forward to seeing you all later in the summer!

    Deb Palmer
    Club Rep Coordinator

Sara Papa, CWGA President, announced on Wednesday, April 9th that the CWGA Executive Committee had voted to cancel all tournaments scheduled through the end of June, with the exception of the Championship, where CWGA is working with CC of Farmington to see if it can be postponed to a later date. Anyone who has already signed up for any of these tournaments will be issued a full refund.
